Ron Magers

Ron Magers, one of the most respected broadcast journalists in the country, joined ABC 7 News as co-anchor of the 5:00 p.m. newscast in March, 1998. In addition to his responsibilities as co-anchor, Magers contributes his expertise in other areas of news and programming coverage, including elections and local specials on community issues. 

Most recently, Ron Magers anchored the 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. news on NBC 5, the NBC-owned station in Chicago, for 16 years, from 1981-1997. 

In addition to his anchor responsibilities at NBC 5, Magers was recognized for his outstanding contributions to live election coverage and for his incisive reporting on various local, state and national issues. 

Prior to coming to NBC 5, he was the principal news anchor at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota from 1974-1981. 

Ron Magers began his broadcast career in radio in Toppenish, Washington, while still in high school. His first job as a television reporter came in 1965 at KEZI-TV in Eugene, Oregon. 

From 1967-1968, he produced and anchored the 11:00 p.m. newscast at KGW-TV in Portland, Oregon. He then moved to San Francisco in 1968 where he was a reporter/anchor at KPIX-TV until 1974. 

Magers has won several major awards, including the Associated Press Award, the Illinois Broadcasters Association Award and the Ohio State Award. He is also the recipient of four Chicago Emmy Awards, a Peter Lisagor Award and a National Press Club citation. 

Magers, a native of California, is married and lives on the near north side of Chicago.
