Daniel Duell

Ballet Chicago - Artistic Director and Instructor

Daniel Duell is Ballet Chicago's Artistic Director and Instructor. Hailing from Dayton, Ohio, Daniel Duell began his dance career at age 11, receiving Ford Foundation Scholarship to study, first locally, and then at The School of American Ballet in New York City. He graduated from the Professional Children's School, where he was the recipient of both a National Merit Scholarship and a Chrysler Merit Award for Academic Excellence. In 1972, he was invited to join the New York City Ballet, making the transition from Corps to Soloist to Principal Dancer from 1979 until 1987.

Mr. Duell came to Chicago in 1987 and founded Ballet Chicago in December of that year. As Artistic Director, he has assembled, trained, and directed the company, forging a repertoire of more than 40 ballets, many of which he has choreographed. He has also created works for Ballet Hispanico of New York, the School of American Ballet, Harkness Dance Theatre, the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, and WTTW, for which he won an Emmy Award. Through his relationship with New York City Ballet and a special licensing agreement with the George Balanchine Trust, Duell has access to many Balanchine ballets, which are now performed by the Ballet Chicago Studio Company.

In addition to his work with Ballet Chicago, Mr. Duell gives master classes throughout the Chicago metropolitan area and across the country. He is a frequent lecturer on ballet, music, and the arts, and he has worked with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Newberry Library, the Chicago Cultural Center, and the Chicago Humanities Festival, among others. Mr. Duell also serves on the advisory boards for the Barrington Youth Dance Ensemble and the Alliance Française.
