Andy Avalos

WMAQ-TV - METEOROLOGIST

 

Andy Avalos currently owns and works at the "Pancake Cafe" at 1264 State Street, Village of Lemont, Illinois.  (630-243-9543)  Give him a visit and tell him that we said "Hi!"

Veteran weather forecaster Andy Avalos joined WMAQ-TV 5 News team in January, 1994, with 20 years of experience in radio, television and broadcast meteorology. Avalos was the lead forecaster on Channel 5's 4:30, 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 PM newscasts.

Avalos came to Channel 5 from WLS-TV where he was the weekend weather forecaster from 1984-94. Simultaneously, from January 1998 through December 1990, he served as morning anchor for Century Broadcasting's FM 100.

From 1982-84, he served as a weather forecaster for KMGH-TV, the CBS affiliate in Denver, Colorado. Prior to that, he worked for four years as a weather forecaster at KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs. Simultaneously, between 1979 and 1982, Avalos worked in his hometown of Pueblo, Colorado as a radio announcer and sales account executive for KDZA-AM/FM.

He began his broadcast career in 1977 at KPUB-AM/FM, a country radio station in Pueblo, where he held a number of positions including program director, music director and morning drive announcer.

Avalos served in the armed forces and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1974.

Avalos is a member of the American Meteorological Society and holds the AMS Seal of approval for television weather forecasting. The Seal is granted to those who show high technical competence in the field of meteorology. He is also a member of the National Weather Association.

Throughout his career Avalos has been committed to community service. He currently volunteers his time to numerous charitable organizations.

Avalos enjoys flying and is working on obtaining his pilot's license. He and his wife Anna have a daughter and live in the western suburbs.
